How to Obtain a Tanzania Visa
There are two primary ways to get a visa for Tanzania:
- Online e-Visa: This is the highly recommended method. You can apply, make a payment, and submit your application through the official Tanzania Electronic Visa Application System. Applications are typically processed within 10 days.
- Visa on Arrival: While possible for many nationalities, applying online in advance is strongly advised to avoid potential delays at the port of entry.
General Requirements
- Your passport must have at least six months of validity from your date of entry.
- Your passport must have at least one blank page for the visa.
- You must be able to show a return ticket upon arrival.
Visa Types and Fees
1. Ordinary Visa (Single Entry)
- Purpose: Tourism, visiting family/friends, attending conferences.
- Validity: Up to 90 days.
- Fee: $50 USD.
- Note: This is the standard visa for most tourists. However, US citizens must apply for a Multiple Entry Visa.
2. Multiple Entry Visa
- Purpose: Required for US citizens for tourism/holiday purposes. Also available for directors of companies in Tanzania, government consultants, and spouses of Tanzanians/residents.
- Validity: Up to 12 months, but each stay cannot exceed 90 consecutive days.
- Fee: $100 USD.
3. Business Visa
- Purpose: For short-term professional assignments, repairs, training, or other business-related tasks.
- Validity: Up to 90 days (single entry).
- Fee: $250 USD.
4. Transit Visa
- Purpose: For transiting through Tanzania to another destination.
- Validity: Up to 7 days.
- Fee: $30 USD.
- Requirement: Proof of onward travel (onward ticket and/or visa for the destination country) is required.
Visa-Exempt Nationalities
Citizens of the following countries and regional blocs do not require a visa to enter Tanzania:
- East African Community (EAC) Member States
- Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States (except Comoros)
- Many Commonwealth countries (exceptions include the UK, Canada, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Australia, and New Zealand, whose citizens require a visa).
Referral Visa Countries
Citizens from the following countries require special clearance and MUST apply for a visa online well in advance (at least two months before travel). They cannot obtain a visa on arrival.
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Yemen, and stateless individuals or those with refugee status.
