5 Days Rwanda Safari: Gorillas & Chimpanzee Trekking

Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

You will be picked up from your lodge or Kigali airport by your guide/driver. You will be transferred to Volcanoes National Park (2 hours from Kigali). Arrival will be early before lunch and after you will be able to visit Iby’iwacu cultural village to discover the local culture of Rwanda. Dinner and overnight stay at Da Vinci lodge/Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/Hotel Le Palm.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking and Transfer to Lake Kivu

After an early breakfast at 07:30am, there will be a briefing on gorilla rules at the park visitor center. Your guides will advise about things to carry with you in the forest such as insect repellant, shoes, packed lunch, and drinking water. With other visitors, you are guided through the forest in search for gorillas. You will be able to observe the gorillas feeding on vegetation for 1 hour. You will return for lunch at the lodge after which you transfer to Lake Kivu. Enjoy the day with boat riding on Lake Kivu before dinner and overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel/Paradise Malahide/Hotel Gorillas Lake Kivu.

Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Set off from Lake Kivu after breakfast at 08am. You are heading to Nyungwe Forest, home to 13 species of primates including chimpanzee and the large troops of up to 300 black and white colobus monkeys. The journey is quite long, taking 7 hours, but your driver will make stops along the Congo-Nile ridge to enjoy the scenery. Arrival in Nyungwe will be early evening. Check in and relax for dinner and overnight at Gisakura Guest House/Nyungwe Top View Lodge.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk

After breakfast, your guide will introduce you to Rwandan development guides to take you on chimpanzee tracking. After a walk in the forest, you encounter the chimps and observe them for 1 hour. You are likely to spot abundant wildlife such as colobus monkeys, birds, butterflies. Return for lunch at the lodge. In the afternoon, connect to Uwinka visitor center starting point for canopy walk. You walk on the canopy bridges 50 meters above the ground which offer views of Nyungwe forest. Return for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Transfer Back to Kigali

Today you will have breakfast at your hotel and be ready to transfer back to Kigali for departure.
